Brasilia: In 2025, deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest reached its lowest point since 2019, which was a major environmental achievement for the nation. According to data from the MapBiomas monitoring network, Brazil lost almost 985,000 hectares of original vegetation last year, a decrease of 20.6% from 2024.

The greatest tropical rainforest in the world, the Amazon, saw a 23.5% decrease in deforestation over the course of the year. The improvement is a result of authorities' ongoing efforts to reduce environmental crimes, illicit logging, and land clearing across the area.

Environmental organisations warned that forest destruction is still a major concern despite progress. Experts pointed out that the environment is still threatened by wildfires, drought, and forest degradation, and thousands of hectares of rainforest are still being removed each year.

The results align with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's pledge to end deforestation by 2030, as Brazil looks to strengthen its climate credentials ahead of significant international environmental negotiations.
