Dharamshala: Penpa Tsering was sworn in on Wednesday for a second consecutive five-year term as the head of Tibet's government-in-exile, officially known as the Central Tibetan Administration, following his re- election earlier this year.
The 58-year-old leader, who has led the administration since 2021, took the oath in Dharamshala with the Dalai Lama present. In his inaugural speech, Tsering reaffirmed his support for the ‘Middle Way Policy,’ which promotes a diplomatic and peaceful resolution of the Tibet-China dispute.
Following the 1959 uprising against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans fled Tibet, leading to the establishment of the Central Tibetan Administration. Despite not being acknowledged by China, the administration, which is based in India, operates as a government-in-exile with executive, legislative, and judicial divisions.
Tibetans living in exile all over the world gave Tsering another power after he was re-elected in February. Beijing has not had official negotiations with representatives of Dalai Lama since 2010 and continues to deny the legitimacy of the Tibetan government.
