TEHRAN: Iranian authorities executed a man on Tuesday morning after convicting him of intelligence cooperation and espionage on behalf of Israel's Mossad spy agency, according to the country's judiciary.
The executed man, identified as Gholamreza Khani Shakarab, was hanged after his capital sentence was officially upheld by the Supreme Court.
State prosecutors described Shakarab as an operational ringleader for Mossad abroad, alleging that he was lured back into the country via a complex intelligence deception operation spearheaded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to judicial records, Shakarab was specifically tasked by foreign handlers to build an asset network inside Iran to launch anti-security operations. Authorities also alleged that Mossad instructed him to travel to an undisclosed regional nation to plan the assassination of a Jewish rabbi, a plot Iran claims was designed to frame Tehran for anti-Jewish terrorism.
The execution is the latest in a rapid surge of security-related capital punishments enacted by the Islamic Republic. It marks the third high-profile hanging in a 48-hour window, following Monday's execution of a protest-linked militant and Sunday's hanging of Mojtaba Kian, the first reported spy execution directly connected to Iran's ongoing war with the United States and Israel.
