Manila: Philippine police have detained a suspect following a burst of gunfire inside the Senate building on Wednesday night. The incident occurred while Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, was seeking ‘protective custody’ within the legislature. No casualties were reported from the shooting, which triggered a building-wide lockdown.
The suspect, identified as a 44-year-old driver for the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), was apprehended on the building's second floor shortly after the shots rang out.
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla stated that the chaos began when several armed men attempted to ascend the Senate stairway, prompting security to fire warning shots. The ICC recently unsealed an arrest warrant for dela Rosa concerning his role in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly drug crackdown.
