Israel’s Actions in Lebanon Cast Doubt Over US-Iran Ceasefire Progress

Tel Aviv: Israeli air strikes on Lebanon are raising serious concerns over the stability of the recently announced US-Iran ceasefire, just as diplomatic talks are set to begin. The attacks, which have killed more than 250 people in a single day, mark one of the deadliest escalations in the region since the broader conflict began.

The ceasefire, brokered to pause weeks of intense fighting between the United States and Iran, was intended to create space for negotiations toward a longer-term settlement. However, a key point of contention has emerged over whether Lebanon is included in the agreement. While Iran and mediators argue that the truce applies to all fronts, Israel and the US maintain that operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon fall outside its scope.

This disagreement has exposed major cracks in the ceasefire framework. Israeli officials have continued their military campaign in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions, even as diplomatic efforts intensify. The timing of these strikes—just hours after the ceasefire announcement—has fueled fears that the fragile agreement could collapse before talks even begin.

International reactions have been swift. Several countries, including France and the United Kingdom, have criticised the continued attacks and called for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire. Analysts warn that without a broader understanding covering all conflict zones, the truce risks becoming ineffective.

With negotiations expected to take place in Pakistan, the situation remains highly volatile. Continued violence in Lebanon not only complicates diplomatic efforts but also risks triggering wider regional escalation, potentially derailing hopes for a sustained peace between the US and Iran.
