Iran has issued a strong warning that it could deploy naval mines across key waterways in the Persian Gulf if its coasts or islands come under attack by the United States or Israel.

In a statement carried by state media, Iran’s defence council said any hostile action targeting its coastal areas would trigger a military response in line with established defence strategies. The council emphasized that critical access routes and communication lines in the Gulf and surrounding coastal zones could be mined using various types of naval mines, including drifting mines deployable directly from shorelines.

The defence council, which operates under Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was established following the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June 2025. The body is tasked with coordinating high-level defence responses amid escalating regional tensions.

The warning underscores growing concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways, through which a significant portion of global energy supplies pass.
