“I have a plan for my country and my people,” Tarique Rahman

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged calm and cooperation to implement his vision for the country in his first speech on Bangladeshi soil in nearly two decades.

Addressing party members and the nation at a reception in Dhaka yesterday, Tarique said, “Standing on Bangladesh soil today, as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, I want to say that I have a plan for the people of my country, for my country.”

Before his remarks, Tarique referenced the historic 1963 speech by American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who declared, “I have a dream.” Tarique said he does not have a dream, but a concrete plan focused on serving the people, promoting development, and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.

He called for the support of citizens and democratic forces across Bangladesh, saying, “If you stand by us and support us, God willing, we will be able to implement this plan.”

Starting his speech with “Dear Bangladesh,” Tarique recalled the country’s fight for independence in 1971 and the protection of its sovereignty in 2024 by citizens from all walks of life. He emphasized that today, people want their democratic rights restored and to receive fair treatment based on merit.

Tarique also stressed the importance of unity, calling for a Bangladesh that embraces all citizens, regardless of religion or identity, where everyone can leave home and return safely. He urged the public to reject violence and provocation and emphasized law and order.

During his 15-minute speech, Tarique mentioned the killing of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, Inquilab Monch’s spokesman, and highlighted that building the Bangladesh envisioned by the nation’s martyrs is a way to honor their sacrifice.

“Peace and security must be ensured for everyone, of every age, profession and faith,” he said, repeating the call for peace three times during his address.
