EU Delays Retaliation on US Tariffs, Announces Free Trade Progress with Indonesia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday that the EU will hold off on retaliating against US steel and aluminium tariffs as talks continue to avoid broader trade penalties.

Speaking to reporters, von der Leyen said the United States had sent a letter warning of potential new tariffs – up to 30% – unless a negotiated solution is reached soon. In response, the EU has decided to extend its suspension of countermeasures until early August.

"The US has informed us of the steps it may take if we don’t reach a deal. So, we will also continue to pause our response until early next month,” she explained.

The current pause in EU retaliation was set to expire Monday night.

In another key development, von der Leyen revealed a political breakthrough with Indonesia on a long-awaited free trade deal. During a meeting in Brussels with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, she shared optimism about the progress.

“We’re living in turbulent times,” she said. “When economic uncertainty meets global instability, like-minded partners must stand closer. Today, we’re making a big step forward in our partnership.”

The EU hopes the trade agreement with Indonesia will boost economic ties and show resilience in a shifting global landscape.
