Billionaire Elon Musk says he’s launching a brand-new political party in the US, just weeks after a very public fallout with former President Donald Trump.
In a post on his platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk said he’s forming the "America Party" — an alternative to the current two-party system made up of Republicans and Democrats.
However, it's still unclear if this party has been officially registered with US election authorities. Also, since Musk was born outside the US, he can’t run for president himself. He hasn’t said who might lead the new party.
The idea first came up during Musk’s public spat with Trump. Once a strong supporter — even dancing with Trump at rallies and bringing his young son to the White House — Musk later stepped down from his role in Trump’s administration and the relationship soured.
During that time, Musk ran a poll on X asking people whether the US needed a new political party. On Saturday, referring to that poll, he wrote:
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it!
When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.
Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
So far, the Federal Election Commission hasn’t released any documents confirming the party’s official formation.
In the past, smaller parties like the Libertarian, Green, and People's Parties have tried to break through America’s two-party stronghold — but none have made significant national progress.
Musk’s shift is a major turnaround. Just last year, he poured $250 million into Trump’s campaign and was even appointed to lead the “Department of Government Efficiency” — a group focused on cutting government spending. Now, he’s turning his back on that world to try and reshape American politics.
