International Day of Older Persons

The number of people aged 60 and above has more than doubled over the past thirty years, reaching 1.2 billion. By 2050, an additional 900 million older persons will join our global family. This represents a profound demographic shift with far-reaching implications for economies, health systems, and social cohesion.

We must respond with foresight and decisive action. This means ensuring that the rights of older persons are fully respected, their dignity upheld, and their contributions recognized.

As this year’s theme reminds us, older persons are powerful agents of change. Their voices must be heard in shaping policies, combating age discrimination, and fostering inclusive societies.

Communities of all ages benefit from the wisdom and experience of older persons. They offer invaluable lessons on navigating uncertainty, resolving conflicts, and building solidarity across generations.

Let us commit to listening, learning, and acting. Together, we can build a world where older persons are valued, empowered, and celebrated.
