Defender Ahmed Bughammar has aggravated an injury and has left the senior men’s national football team’s ongoing training camp in Dubai.

This was announced yesterday by the Bahrain Football Association.

Bughammar, nursing a back injury, is hopeful of making a quick recovery to be able to rejoin the Bahraini squad ahead at the AFC Asian Cup, which kicks off Friday in Doha.

The Al Khaldiya Club player has been replaced on the roster by Al Shabab’s Salem Hussain, who has been called up by head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.

The Bahrainis continued their training programme yesterday in the UAE with work both in the gym and on the pitch.

They are scheduled to play an informational friendly match tomorrow against African side Angola.

The game will take place at Dubai Police Club Stadium.

The nationals had also played an official tune-up last week against Australia, who are also competing in the AFC Asian Cup.

The Bahrainis are in Group E for the competition’s preliminary round along with South Korea, Malaysia and Jordan.

The nationals kick off their campaign against the South Koreans on 15 January at 2.30pm, and then take on their Malaysian counterparts on 20 January at 5.30pm.

They complete the preliminaries against Jordan on 25 January at 2.30pm. All times are Bahrain.
