Bahrain added two bronze medals yesterday at the fifth Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey. The medals were won in shooting and judo, with Maryam Hassani taking her bronze medal in the women’s skeet final while Ramazan Kodzhakov taking his bronze in the men’s under-66kg weight class.

The two-medal haul brought Bahrain’s tally so far at the Games to 22, including nine gold medals, seven silver and six bronze. Nineteen of the medals were won in athletics, and one each in cycling, shooting and judo. In yesterday’s women’s skeet final, Maryam clinched her medal after finishing with 26 points.

Sena Can of Turkey won gold with 37 points, while Nurlana Jafarova of Azerbaijan clinched silver with 36 points. Earlier, Maryam was fifth in the qualification round amongst 17 participants. Fellow-Bahrainis Maryam Alasam and Latifa Alnajem were ninth and 15th, respectively. Meanwhile, in judo, Kodzhakov won his under-66kg bronze after defeating his opponent from Kazakhstan in the match for third place.

He had earlier lost in the semi-finals to his rival from Uzbekistan, before earlier beating opponents from Algeria and Turkmenistan. Bahrain’s 22 medals now surpassed the national team’s haul from the previous edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games, when they won 21. This year’s edition is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
