Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, saying he now plans to play in other franchise leagues around the world.
The 38-year-old, a master off-spinner who retired from international cricket in December during India’s Test tour of Australia, leaves the IPL as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in its history, claiming 187 wickets.
Ashwin played for five IPL teams and won the tournament twice with Chennai Super Kings, in 2010 and 2011. He also appeared for the team in this year’s edition.
On social media, Ashwin wrote:
"They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today."
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow current Indian international or domestic players to participate in overseas leagues, making Ashwin eligible to explore opportunities abroad.
Ashwin finished his India career with 537 Test wickets in 106 matches at an average of 24.00. He also represented India in 116 one-day internationals and 65 T20 matches, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in world cricket.
