Brazilian champions strike early, defend late to book quarter-final spot

Fluminense delivered a major shock at the FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Inter Milan 2–0 to secure a place in the quarter-finals and knock out last season’s Champions League runners-up.

German Cano gave the Copa Libertadores champions a dream start in the third minute, heading through goalkeeper Yann Sommer's legs after a deflected cross. Substitute Hercules sealed the victory in stoppage time, finishing calmly from the edge of the area.

Despite dominating possession, Inter struggled to break down Fluminense’s compact three-man defence — a tactical switch from coach Renato that proved decisive. “I told them it would work,” Renato said post-match. “Inter are a great team with more money, but on the field it’s 11 against 11.”

Colombian winger Jhon Arias was a constant threat, while 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio delivered a standout performance, including a vital save from Sebastiano Esposito and watching Lautaro Martinez strike the post late on.

Inter’s best chance came in the 69th minute, when Stefan de Vrij missed from close range. An earlier goal by Ignacio was ruled out for offside.

Fluminense now advance to face either Manchester City or Al Hilal in Orlando on Friday.
