Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has informed winger Alejandro Garnacho that he is free to leave the club this summer, following tensions after Wednesday’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
Final Sparks Friction
Garnacho, introduced as a 71st-minute substitute in the loss, expressed frustration post-match, stating, “Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don’t know.” His brother, Roberto, escalated the situation on social media, claiming Garnacho was “thrown under the bus” despite his contributions, including two goals in recent finals.
Amorim’s Stance
Speaking ahead of United’s final Premier League match against Aston Villa today, Amorim remained focused on the game but confirmed plans for a squad overhaul, saying, “We have an idea of the type of squad we want.” Garnacho’s involvement against Villa remains uncertain.
Tactical Misfit
Amorim’s relationship with Garnacho has been strained since his arrival. In December, the Argentina international was dropped alongside Marcus Rashford for a win at Manchester City due to “training performances, game performances, and engagement with team-mates.” Despite a swift recall, Garnacho’s orthodox winger role struggles to fit Amorim’s system, which favoured Amad Diallo and Mason Mount behind striker Rasmus Hojlund in Bilbao.
Transfer Implications
As a homegrown player under Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules, Garnacho’s potential sale would provide financial flexibility for Amorim, who faces a season without European football. United have been linked with Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, whose £62.5m release clause could be targeted. Interest in Garnacho has previously come from Chelsea, who nearly signed him in January, and Serie A champions Napoli.
What Lies Ahead
With 11 goals this season, Garnacho remains United’s second-highest scorer, but his future appears elsewhere. As Amorim reshapes the squad, this summer promises significant changes at Old Trafford.
