Undefeated season

The Bahrain School Girls’ Varsity Soccer team’s undefeated season in the Bahrain Private School Sports League culminated with a 6-0 victory.

On Monday, March 7th Bahrain School’s Lady Falcons played in the League’s Championship match against last year’s winners St. Christopher’s at the Bahrain Rugby and Football Club.

Previously, during regular season matches, Bahrain School beat St. Christopher’s 2-0. In a show of sportsmanship, Bahrain School agreed to play a 10-aside match as the St. Christopher’s team arrived with 10 players and no subs.

The Lady Falcons began strong - pressuring their opponents from the onset of the game with a high intensity that they maintained throughout the match. Within the first 3 minutes, due to a handball by a St. Christopher’s player in the box, Bahrain School was awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Helena Blaisdell-Black took the kick, blasting the ball out of the keeper’s reach and into the net.

Helena followed this penalty by scoring two more goals in the first half and earning a hat-trick. Both goals were powerful shots taken from the right of the goal outside of the box.

In the second half, a goal came from an own goal by a St. Christopher’s defender after a corner kick taken by Bahrain School. Hala Alzayani scored her first goal of the match 10 minutes into the second half from an incredible shot taken near the right-hand corner, which soared up and into the goal.

This was followed shortly after by her shot inside the box into the bottom left corner of the goal. Sonomi Maeomote provided the assist. Goalkeeper Luna Pucillo made some excellent saves and the defensive line worked as a cohesive unit to keep St. Christopher’s off the scoreboard. In the short duration of the Island League, the Bahrain School Varsity Girls team’s communication, control and passing has improved dramatically. They now begin the regular practice season in preparation for the DODEA European Soccer Tournament this May.
