Russia’s main airport struggles with luggage pile up

A tonne of uncollected luggage has piled up at Russia’s main airport, the transport minister said Friday, as the Moscow metro sent workers to help out after baggage handlers reportedly quit their jobs en masse. Passengers have complained over the past week of waiting for their luggage for hours at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.

Television reports showed footage of chaotic piles of suitcases in the loading areas which did not make it to the carousels. Russian media said, citing sources, which the problem stems from salary cuts which led handlers to quit following salary cuts. On Friday, Transport Minister Yevgeny Ditrikh said that there was “still about a tonne of luggage that hasn’t been sorted,” RIA Novosti news agency reported. On Thursday, the Moscow metro said it would send its own workers to help.

The metro’s trade union said on social media that trainee train drivers are being sent to the airport. The airport first admitted there was a problem on Tuesday and promised to “take necessary measures” and solve the problem by the end of the month.
