Bahrain's Southern Area Municipality is celebrating a year of environmental progress and community engagement. The municipality planted a staggering 20,349 trees across 91 locations, significantly beautifying residential areas, main streets, parks, and gardens.

This large-scale afforestation initiative was undertaken in collaboration with various agencies and institutions.

Engineer Isa Abdulrahman Al-Buainain, Director General of the Southern Area Municipality, highlighted the ongoing efforts.

“The planting programme not only enhances the aesthetics of our region,” he told The Daily Tribune, “but it also improves air quality and provides natural shade for residents.” The beautification efforts extend beyond the tree-planting programme.

The municipality has completed the first phase of projects to beautify Zallaq Street, plant Zayed City Walk, and develop the irrigation network on Zallaq Street and Al-Maskar. Additionally, plans are underway for Zallaq Harbour Park, Safra Park, Zallaq Rest House, and Independence Walk.

Looking beyond aesthetics, the Southern Area Municipality remains dedicated to ensuring public order. Over the past year, they actively monitored construction violations and encroachments on public roads, addressing 317 building violations, 267 road occupancy violations, and 110 shared housing violations.

“Throughout 2023, we implemented 58 joint campaigns focused on public awareness about tree planting, public cleanliness, and hygiene.” These initiatives, along with educational programmes in schools, aim to foster a sense of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship among residents.
