A Bahrain judge has refused to suspend the sentence imposed on a doctor convicted of causing the death of an individual in a traffic accident in Nuwaidrat.

The doctor was sentenced to six months in jail, a ruling upheld by the Court of Appeals. The court heard that the incident occurred when the accused failed to exercise the necessary care and attention while driving.

He posed a danger to pedestrians as he was supposedly distracted by his mobile phone while approaching an intersection. This resulted in a collision with the victim, who was crossing the road. Though he was taken to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.

The public prosecution charged the doctor with causing the death of the victim due to his negligent driving, failing to exercise the utmost care, not adhering to safety precautions, using his mobile phone while driving, and causing damage to others’ property.

The Court of First Instance sentenced him to six months of imprisonment and set bail at BD200 to suspend the execution. It also ordered the suspension of his driving licence for three months after serving the prison term.
