Anyone who lives in a property continuously for 60 years is eligible to own it. The High Appeals court stated this while pronouncing its verdict in a court battle over the ownership of an old house in Muharraq.

Fighting over the ownership of the house was two families in Muharraq. One of them was currently living in the house, while the other, a 19-member family, sought an eviction order claiming ownership.

They claimed ownership of the house, arguing that it was built by their grandparents but was abandoned. However, during the trial, a 71-year-old man testified that the mother of the family currently living in the house was born in the same house and had spent her entire life there.

The family’s lawyer said that this testimony tilted the case in their favour. Accepting the testimony, the court stated, “As per the law, anybody who lives in a property for 60 years continuously becomes eligible to own it as staying in a property is a valid reason to receive its ownership.”

The court also rejected the other family’s claim and ordered competent authorities to issue an ownership certificate to the family living in the house.
