Power consumption up in July and August to beat the heat

Manama

It seems the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) was on the heat seat at least for two months! Reason: The soaring temperatures during the last two months in the Kingdom have also contributed to the rise in power consumption.

As the mercury levels rose in July and August, people of Bahrain had a tough time to cope with the torrid days. Eventually, it led to the high demand for electricity during this period.

Minister of Energy and Water Affairs, Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza yesterday informed the cabinet that the demand for electricity for July and August went up by 9 per cent, compared to the same period last year. “But the Ministry managed the electricity demand efficiently, without causing any inconvenience to the people of Bahrain,” Mirza added.

After the cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Information Affairs Minister Isa bin Abdulrahman Al Hammadi informed: “The cabinet reviewed the report on energy consumption, which peaked due to high temperatures.”

The website of the Ministry of Energy and Water Affairs stated yesterday that the total demand for electricity in the Kingdom was 3,441 Megawatt (MW), while the total availability was 3,807MW, hinting enough availability of power in the Kingdom.

According to international sources, the power consumption increased across Middle East and Europe as the sweltering heat hit hard in these regions.

The US weather officials recently stated that July was the planet’s warmest month on record. Moreover, this year will beat last year as the warmest year on record, the officials of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
