'go back' Hussain the fisherman told before he threw the most expensive...

A group of Bahraini fishermen launched a campaign on social media (#take-it-back to-the-sea) urging all fishermen to return fish juveniles to sea, giving them a chance to breed and grow.

"It is true that “hamoor” is the most expensive type of fish, but we must preserve the fish wealth," said Hussain one of the participating fishermen who threw a “hamoor” fish into the sea and chanted "go back".

The campaign is an old one launched in 2014 following the decision to stop shrimp fishing during the mating season. It was extended to all Gulf countries and hit the limelight in 2018 after a blogger posted a clip of an elderly Bahraini man named Mohamed Abdulmalek expressing his sadness after seeing fish juveniles being sold in the market.

Bahrain Fishermen's Society representative Ali Haji Hassan said that fishing smaller ones is a crime against the fish wealth in the Kingdom. An inspector should be appointed to catch the culprits.”

“In Bahrain, we have to form legislations that suit our marine environment, especially to stop using what is known as ‘Israeli net’ - a type of net that catches small fish.”
