No sign of foul play in US mariner death in Bahrain

Manama : There was no sign of foul play in the death of a 22-year-old civilian mariner in Bahrain, according to the findings of a preliminary Navy investigation.

Marcus D. Prince of Norfolk died April 26 in a hotel in Juffair while he was on liberty, although the Navy has not said how he died. The military has said only that Prince’s death was not combat-related and remains under investigation.

Prince had been assigned to the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Pecos as an ordinary seaman. An ordinary seaman aids other crew with general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment and areas that are the responsibility of the deck department.

The Navy said Prince had served with Military Sealift Command for about nine months. Military Sealift Command ships are owned by the Navy and crewed by civilian mariners.

The Pecos deployed from Norfolk in April. The Pecos provides underway replenishment of fuel, cargo and stores to customer ships at sea, according to the Military Sealift Command.
