Homeopathy gains currency in Bahrain

Homeopathy, a system of alternative medicine, has become increasingly popular for treating diseases caused by unstable weather conditions, according to practitioners.

More patients are visiting homeopathy clinics for treating viral infections, colds and other diseases caused by unstable weather and changing climate. Having seen that antibiotics are not effective against viral infections, patients are turning to homeopathy, according to homeopathy practitioners. 

They said that they had been receiving both Bahraini and expatriate patients. Homeopathy treatment uses diluted substances that supposedly boost the immune system and help the body heal itself.

Speaking to DT News, Dr Asha Sreekumar said that she receives 20 patients a day on average. “I have been practicing for 15 years in Bahrain and I have only seen the interest in homeopathy increasing. In recent years, there has been a rapid jump – more people are coming in for treating for various diseases, especially the ones related to climate change such as cough and cold.  People are also coming for skin diseases, haemorrhoids, gastric problems, and even depression.”

“Both Bahrainis and expatriates are coming in for treatment. Bahrainis generally come after they were recommended by expatriates. They come once, and they continue the treatment after seeing positive results. Homeopathy is safe and effective, it has no side effects, and it’s effective for all age groups.”

Echoing a similar view, Dr Raaj Swetta said, “During the last 20 years, the number of people using homeopathy has increased significantly. Many people are turning to this branch of medicine and finding it a most effective alternative to treatment with conventional drugs and medicines.” 

“Homeopathy is a holistic form of healing. This means that it takes account of the unique­ness of each person in the treat­ment of illness. Whereas orthodox medicine might treat a number of people with a cold in the same way, homeopathy will treat patient-specific symptoms as closely as possible. Thus, each person might end up with a completely different remedy.  Essentially homeopathy works by helping the body’s defense system to fight the disease itself,” he noted.
