A Labour Court has ordered a company to pay an expatriate worker more than BD1,500 after finding he was dismissed part-way through a fixed-term contract without proper notice.
The ruling awards BD333 in unpaid wages. Interest is fixed at 6 per cent a year on delayed sums for the first six months, then rises by one percentage point for each extra month of delay, capped at 12 per cent a year, running from the due date until payment.
The court also ordered BD100 in lieu of notice, BD267 for accrued annual leave with interest of 1 per cent from the date of entitlement, BD800 as compensation for termination, and the cost of a return air ticket.
Court fees and lawyers’ costs are payable as well.
Case papers show the man joined on a one-year contract at BD100 a month.
He said he worked beyond normal hours, including rest days and holidays, before being told to leave without pay or explanation.
Through lawyer Zahida Al Sayyed, he sought payment of three months’ delayed wages, overtime, leave dues, compensation for unfair dismissal, interest on late sums, a service certificate and a ticket home.
