The High Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian man to 10 years in prison after it was revealed he had been working at the Electricity and Water Authority for 13 years using a forged university degree.

The case came to light when the Authority sought to verify the man’s bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with the Ministry of Education. The Ministry referred the request to the Foreign Ministry’s cultural attaché, who confirmed with officials in the European country where the degree was supposedly issued. Investigations showed that the so-called university was fake, unaccredited, and not recognized by any official body.

The man was hired in 2010 based on the forged degree and continued to have his contract renewed for years. His certificate was even stamped “certified true copy” by an Authority employee, who unknowingly authenticated the forged document.

The Public Prosecution stated that between 2010 and 2023, the man deliberately used the fake degree to gain employment and renew contracts. By submitting false information, he turned a forged document into what appeared to be an official qualification, which was then relied upon for his hiring.

The court convicted him of using a forged document and sentenced him to 10 years in jail.
