A viral video of a tuk-tuk weaving through Diyar Al Muharraq has stirred a parliamentary call to outlaw the three-wheelers from Bahrain’s roads.
MPs Khalid Buanaq, Ahmed Al Salloom and Hesham Al Awadhi submitted a formal proposal to ban the use of tuktuks on public streets, following rising sightings of the vehicles in other parts of the country.
In their written note, the MPs said the vehicles pose a clear risk to safety.
They pointed to the absence of seat belts, weak structure, and poor lighting or signals, arguing that tuk-tuks are ill-suited to the road system and often escape basic upkeep.
The MPs urged the General Directorate of Traffic to increase patrols across Bahrain, seize unlicensed tuk-tuks, issue fines, and confiscate the vehicles if used again or found to put others in danger.
They said the aim is to preserve order on the roads and reduce hazards for both drivers and pedestrians, while stressing the need to stick to the kingdom’s traffic rules.
