A proposal urging the construction of specialised plants to recycle solid waste and convert it into electricity has been referred to the Public Utilities and Environment Committee of the Council of Representatives.

The proposal, submitted by MPs Muneer Seroor, Mohammed Al Ahmed, and Lulwa Al Rumaihi, aims to address the growing environmental challenge of waste disposal while simultaneously creating a sustainable energy source.

It highlights the environmental and economic benefits of transforming waste into a renewable energy resource.

Pollution

The proposal’s explanatory memorandum states that “currently, the disposal of solid waste through methods that can lead to environmental pollution remains a significant concern.

This initiative seeks to mitigate this issue by utilising readily available technology already employed in several countries, including some GCC nations.

“Bahrain, with its increasing focus on environmental sustainability projects, sees this as a key step in improving waste management and reducing reliance on landfills.”

Technologies

Moreover, the explanatory memorandum details the various technologies involved in waste-to-energy conversion, with incineration being a prominent example.

This process not only reduces the volume of waste requiring landfill disposal but also provides a renewable energy source, according to the explanatory memorandum.

Furthermore, the proposal stresses the potential for job creation in the recycling and renewable energy sectors, encouraging students to pursue relevant specialisations.

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional landfills is also a key benefit highlighted in the proposal.

The MPs argue that establishing these waste-to-energy plants represents a crucial step toward achieving both environmental and economic sustainability, transforming a burden into a valuable resource.

The Public Utilities and Environment Committee will now review the proposal and consider its feasibility and potential impact on Bahrain’s environment and economy.
