Some 225,000 Germans stranded abroad due to COVID-19 restrictions affecting international travel have been brought home since Berlin began its repatriation operation, the country's foreign office told DPA.
The largest such operation in Germany's history started about four weeks ago and should be completed in a few days, according to the foreign office.
Embassies will continue to look after individual cases, officials added.
The majority of Germans who are still stuck abroad are in South Africa, Argentina, and Peru, the foreign office said.
Numerous countries closed their borders or reduced flights in and out due to the coronavirus pandemic, prompting Germany to bring back its citizens from countries where their commercial airlines had stopped flights.
The German government started the repatriation campaign in mid-March, with travel operators and the German airline, Lufthansa.
The foreign office also brought back some 60,000 passengers on 235 chartered flights, including 5,000 European Union citizens and 1,000 from states outside the EU bloc.
