LOS ANGELES: A24’s new horror film Backrooms has completely rewritten box office history after securing an astonishing $81.5 million domestic debut during its opening weekend. The theatrical sensation more than doubled the studio's previous high-water mark, easily taking the number one spot globally.

Directed and co-written by 20-year-old viral YouTube creator Kane Parsons, the film officially marks the largest opening weekend haul ever recorded for an original horror movie. With this feat, Parsons has cemented his place in cinematic history as the youngest filmmaker ever to debut a feature film at number one.

The movie serves as a big-screen adaptation of Parsons' viral internet web series, which initially began as a ‘creepypasta’ urban legend detailing a terrifying, never-ending maze of dull, empty hallways.

Starring Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the low-budget $10 million production drew massive, highly enthusiastic Gen Z crowds to theaters worldwide, signaling a massive shift in the tide for mainstream cinema.
