Pressure Mounts for Elections in Venezuela as Maduro’s Absence Continues

Caracas: Opposition leaders in Venezuela are calling for new presidential elections, saying the continued absence of President Nicolas Maduro means the country needs new leadership.

The opposition party led by Maria Corina Machado said elections must be held within 30 days. Maduro has been out of the country since he was captured by U.S. forces in January and taken to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

After his removal, former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez took over as interim leader. However, the constitution says she can only hold power temporarily, and if the president is absent for more than 90 days, lawmakers must decide whether to declare the position permanently vacant.

More than three months have now passed, and the opposition argues that Maduro is no longer in power. Still, the parliament, which supports the government, has not yet discussed holding new elections.

Tensions are also rising inside the country. Protests have taken place in the capital Caracas, showing growing public frustration. At the same time, the government is focusing on economic reforms, including opening up the oil and mining sectors to foreign investment.

Despite political uncertainty, the situation remains unclear as leaders debate whether to move toward elections or continue with the current arrangement.
