Warner classic ends McCullum's swansong

Brendon McCullum's final Test innings has been ended by a spectacular diving catch from David Warner on day three of the second Test in Christchurch.

McCullum hit three fours and one six – the 107th of his career, which is a Test record – before falling for 25 from 27 balls thanks to a great catch from Warner at midwicket off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

The New Zealand captain was given a standing ovation as he departed Hagley Oval, with the sizeable crowd having braved cold afternoon conditions to watch their beloved leader take his final bow as an international batsman.

Captain Steve Smith was one of several Australian players to shake McCullum's hand as he walked off the ground.

McCullum, who announced in December that the series against Australia would be his last for New Zealand, marked the occasion with a world record 54-ball century on day one of the match – his 12th in a 101-Test career.

The 34-year-old hammered 21 fours and six sixes in his innings of 145 from 79 balls on Saturday, which broke the record of 56 balls held by West Indian Sir Vivian Richards and Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq.

McCullum swung hard again on Monday but his high-risk gameplan didn't pay off second time around, picking out Warner just one ball after he'd hammered a six over the leg-side boundary.

His final statistics read: 101 Tests, 176 innings, 6453 runs, 12 hundreds, 31 fifties, highest score 302.
