Barcelona coach Hansi Flick strongly criticised FIFA after Raphinha was left out of the world governing body’s The Best Men’s XI, describing the selection as “a joke.” Speaking at a press conference following the award ceremony earlier this week, Flick expressed disbelief over the omission of the Brazilian winger.
Raphinha played a vital role on the left flank as Barcelona secured a domestic treble last season. Despite his standout performances, the 29-year-old was overlooked in the final XI, which was voted on by national team coaches, captains, journalists, and fans, with players such as Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham included instead.
“When I see that Raphinha is not in the team, it’s unbelievable,” Flick said. “This FIFA Best XI is really a joke.”
Barcelona were eliminated by Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-finals, but Raphinha finished the competition as joint-top scorer with 13 goals and also led the assists chart with seven. Flick highlighted his decisive impact, calling his goal contributions and overall influence on the team “incredible.”
“For me, it’s not fair. After this season, he absolutely deserved to be in the Best XI,” the German coach added.
Raphinha’s recent return from injury has boosted Barcelona’s form after an unsteady start to the campaign. The defending champions currently lead La Liga and face Villarreal on Sunday, aiming to maintain their advantage after second-placed Real Madrid hosted Sevilla.
However, Barcelona will be without key midfielder Pedri González. Flick confirmed the playmaker is sidelined with a hamstring injury but is expected to return for the next match against Espanyol on January 3.
