Fresh off their Super Cup win over Manama, defending champions Muharraq began their Zain Bahrain Basketball League title defence in style with a 92–78 win over Nuwaidrat last night at the BBA Arena.
Muharraq came out sharp and purposeful, riding the momentum from their recent cup success. They built an early 27–15 lead in the first quarter through Mohamed Buallay’s playmaking and Maytham Jameel’s control in the paint. Ahmed Hasan added a strong defensive presence, denying Nuwaidrat easy looks inside.
Nuwaidrat responded in the second quarter, with Ali Abbas and Hassan Abdulla finding their range to narrow the gap to 46–38 at halftime. But Muharraq’s composure and bench depth told after the break. Buallay and Mohamed Ameer hit consecutive three-pointers to spark a 12–0 third-quarter run that restored control and put the champions firmly ahead.
In the closing minutes, Nuwaidrat’s late push wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Ameer led Muharraq with 24 points, Buallay added 18, and Jameel finished with 16. Abdulla paced Nuwaidrat with 20 points, supported by Abbas on 15.
With back-to-back wins in both league and Super Cup competition, Muharraq have sent a clear early message in their pursuit of another title.
Earlier in the evening, Samaheej defeated Sitra 79–68, fuelled by Joe-Junior Mvuezolo’s all-around display and Salman Alkaibi’s perimeter shooting, which turned the tide in the third quarter.
