Lionel Messi has sparked speculation about his international future ahead of Argentina’s final home game in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The iconic forward described the match against Venezuela on Thursday, 4 September, at Estadio Monumental as a “very, very special match,” raising questions about whether it could be his last appearance for Argentina in front of home fans.

Speaking after Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup semi-final win over Orlando City, Messi said, “It’s going to be a very, very special match for me because it’s the last qualifying match… I don’t know what will happen next.” He added that his family—including his wife, children, parents, and siblings—would be attending the game.

Argentina, already qualified for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, have little at stake in the match. The team secured their place with a 4-1 win over Brazil in March and currently lead the South American qualifying table with 35 points from 16 games.

Messi’s comments come amid growing speculation that he may retire from international football after the World Cup to focus on his club career. By the time 2030 World Cup qualifiers begin, Messi will be 40, making further national team appearances unlikely.

CONMEBOL responded to Messi’s statement with a social media post showing the star in an Argentina jersey captioned, “The last dance is coming.” Meanwhile, the Argentina Football Association (AFA) has raised ticket prices for the upcoming home fixture, with the cheapest tickets now selling for US$100, signaling a possible farewell match for the football legend.
