The Los Angeles Lakers have finalized a major trade with the Dallas Mavericks, acquiring five-time NBA All-Star Luka Dončić in a move that reshapes the league’s landscape. In exchange, the Mavericks receive star forward Anthony Davis, alongside guard Max Christie and a future first-round draft pick.
A Franchise-Altering Deal
As part of the multi-team transaction, Dallas also sends forward Maxi Kleber and center Markieff Morris to Los Angeles, while guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and a future second-round pick are headed to the Utah Jazz.
“We are extremely grateful for Anthony’s six seasons with the Lakers, where he led our franchise to a championship and cemented himself as a perennial All-Star,” said Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. “Luka is a unique young global superstar who will lead this franchise for years to come. His killer instinct and championship mindset will be a driving force for this team.”
Luka’s Stellar Rise
Dončić, 25, originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 before being traded to Dallas, has already left an indelible mark on NBA history. Named Rookie of the Year in 2019, he averaged 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and six assists in his debut season.
His career trajectory has been historic—becoming just the second player in NBA history, after Oscar Robertson, to reach 10,000 points, 3,000 rebounds, and 3,000 assists in his first 400 games. Additionally, he joins Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan as one of only three players to earn five All-NBA First Team selections before turning 26.
Davis’ Legacy in L.A.
At 31, Davis departs Los Angeles as a crucial piece of the Lakers’ 2020 NBA Championship squad. A dominant two-way force, he is one of only eight players to have won an NBA title, an NCAA championship, and an Olympic gold medal. Across 778 regular-season games, he has averaged 24.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
The trade marks a seismic shift in the NBA, with Dončić now tasked with leading the Lakers’ next championship push, while Davis looks to spearhead a new era in Dallas.
