Next Tuesday, Parliament will debate a proposal that aims to introduce a discount pass for Bahraini citizens, providing reductions on services across several sectors, including education, healthcare, telecom, and transportation.
The Ministry of Finance and National Economy has raised concerns about the potential loss of non-oil income, emphasizing the importance of maintaining diverse revenue streams, especially in the current economic climate. However, the proposal has already been approved by a joint committee, composed of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee and the Services Committee. The committee believes the scheme would significantly benefit Bahraini families by easing the financial burden on citizens.
The proposal suggests introducing a card that would provide discounts on various services, similar to the existing benefits extended to certain groups, such as teachers. MP Ali Al Nuaimi, who submitted the proposal, argued that it is essential to support citizens in light of rising living costs and the economic pressures they face.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Finance pointed out that the government already offers a wide range of free services, including education and healthcare, and provides discounted fees for senior citizens. The ministry stressed that these efforts already play a key role in alleviating financial strain for many Bahrainis.
