Car blast case: Verdict upheld

47-year-old Saudi national convicted of setting off a bomb at Gudaibiya on November 7, 2012 has had his 15-year in prison upheld.

Two cars were gutted in the blast that had rocked Gudaibiya. However, no human casualties were reported in the incident. The prosecution established the Saudi national’s involvement in the blast after his DNA samples matched with that of the ones recovered at the blast site through a DNA test.

Police also seized several mobile phones, a computer and a memory stick from the possession of the accused when they raided his home after the blast.

Prosecutors during the course of their argument told the court that the accused had used the items, seized by the police, to make improved bombs.

Interrogation of the accused had revealed that he selected Gudaibiya for the blast considering the fact that it is a popular tourism destination replete with a healthy presence of hospitality industry.

Court files indicated there are some more persons who had also played an active role in the blast. However, their identities could not be established so far.

The Saudi national’s DNA samples became available after a court in the past had ordered him to undergo a DNA test after his ex-wife sued him for now owning the fatherhood of their child.

The accused was earlier handed down 15 years on two other occasions for his involvement in two similar cases.
