Child Law to be revamped

Child and Woman Committee in Shura Council is reviewing the Child Law 2012 to make it up-to-date ensuring the full protection of the children in Bahrain.

Shura Council Member and Chairperson Child and Woman Committee Hala Ramzy chaired the committee meeting on the Shura Council premises yesterday to discuss this issue in detail and review the Child Law no. 37 of 2012.

The members of the committee Fatima Al Kooheji, Dr. Jehad Al Fadel, Dr. Abdul Aziz Abul, Ms Zahwa Al Kowary and Dr. Mohammad Hasan attended the meeting.

Speaking to DT News, Hala Ramzy said that they were working on the amendments that could ensure that “our children” were fully protected from all sorts of abuses especially the cyber abuses.

According to her, the influence of social media on children is huge. “There were many reported and unreported issues related to the exploitation of the children due to this.”

She said that they wanted to ensure that the children were provided with all the rights and were saved from all abuses.

Ms Ramzy said that the reviewing of the laws related to the child rights on continuous basis was very important to ensure its compatibility with Child Rights International Convention that Kingdom of Bahrain has ratified.

She said that the main objective of their study was to find out the areas where the modifications were needed in the child law.

The Committee will continue with the study and review members’ views on this critical matter in the next meeting.

She said that the Child Law of Bahrain was considered one of the best regionally but there were some terms to be defined clearly. For instance, there is a term “Economic Abuse” in the law but no proper definition for it is included in the current version.
