Beijing: A Chinese court has ordered popular bubble tea shop Molly Tea to pay $1.5 million (10 million yuan) in damages to luxury fashion firm Louis Vuitton after finding that the company violated the brand's trademark rights by adopting a similar four-petal floral emblem.

The court determined that Molly Tea's emblem was very similar to several of Louis Vuitton's trademark floral designs, which feature on many of the luxury brand's signature items, and could mislead customers. Molly Tea has said that it will appeal the verdict and has already modified its logo on its mobile app.

The judgement sparked intense online discussion. Many Chinese social media users contend that the compensation is disproportionate, while others claim the ruling emphasises how crucial it is to defend intellectual property rights.
