SUVA: Fiji is poised for a major economic and infrastructure boost after the Quad nations announced a landmark agreement to jointly construct a new port project in the Pacific Island country. Unveiled Tuesday at the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the initiative represents the alliance's first-ever collaborative physical infrastructure venture in the Pacific.
The joint effort by Australia, India, Japan, and the United States launches the "Quad Ports of the Future Partnership," with Fiji serving as the foundational pilot case. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted that the development specifically targets critical port capacity deficits in the South Pacific.
The strategic hub will serve as an alternative development model prioritizing economic transparency. Beyond boosting regional trade connectivity and digital undersea cabling, the upgrade will drastically enhance maritime surveillance to combat illegal fishing across the corridor.
