Bahrain’s youth national volleyball team made a convincing winning start yesterday in the first West Asia Men’s U19 Volleyball Championship 2023, currently being held in Jeddah.

The nationals got their title bids underway with a resounding three-set sweep of Kuwait. The Bahrainis needed a short period at the beginning of the opening set to warm up, but once they got into their groove, were a class above their rivals.

They eventually closed out the win with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-16) score line. Bahrain were led in the contest by the strong play of Abbas Ehsan, Hassan Al Warqa and Hussain Issa, among others.

The rest of the team in the competition, where they are coached by Tunisian Saber Abdulwahed, includes Mohammed Redha, Mahdi Hussain, Hussain Ali Radhi, Yasser Haji, Mohammed Hassan Nasser, Hussain Ismail, Ali Hussain Issa, Abdulla Al Haiki and Mohammed Al Khabbaz.

Bahrain are one of eight national teams in the maiden edition of the tournament. They are in Group A for the preliminary round alongside the Kuwaitis, the UAE and Syria; while Group B comprises Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The Bahrainis will be hoping to maintain their winning ways when they return to the playing court tonight when they take on their Emirati counterparts at 8pm. The nationals then play Syria in their concluding group stage game tomorrow, also at 8pm.
