Can FIFA World Cup 2026 Go Green?
As preparations intensify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, stadium operators are placing renewed emphasis on enhancing fan experience while meeting stricter sustainability requirements set by FIFA.
With updated environmental guidelines encouraging reduced carbon emissions, sustainable construction materials, LED lighting, zero-carbon operations, waste reduction and green building certifications such as LEED, venues are looking for practical upgrades that deliver immediate impact.
One focus area gaining attention is restroom infrastructure. Excel Dryer, Inc. has highlighted how high-efficiency hand dryers can help stadiums meet environmental targets while improving cleanliness and visitor satisfaction.
Models such as the XLERATOR, ThinAir and XLERATORsync eliminate the need for paper towels, reducing carbon emissions by up to 94 percent and significantly cutting restroom waste. This supports zero-landfill initiatives and lowers operational costs for large venues.
According to an international study conducted by Excel Dryer in partnership with MetrixLab, hygiene remains the top concern among global visitors, with overflowing paper towel bins cited as the primary cause of poor restroom impressions — an issue that can negatively affect overall match-day experience.
William Gagnon, Executive Vice President and COO of Excel Dryer, said transitioning to high-efficiency hand dryers aligns with FIFA’s sustainability framework while addressing a key source of guest dissatisfaction. He described the upgrade as a small but visible step toward climate action.
To support preparations for 2026, the company is offering stadiums and arenas a no-cost trial of its XLERATOR technology, including complimentary custom covers featuring team branding or World Cup-themed designs. The initiative allows venues to evaluate performance, hygiene improvements and sustainability benefits ahead of the tournament.
As global anticipation builds, stadiums are increasingly adopting smarter, eco-conscious solutions to demonstrate environmental leadership while ensuring a cleaner and more enjoyable experience for fans.
