Awali Golf Club retained the Green Brown Challenge Trophy after a tense 5.5–5.5 draw with The Royal Golf Club in their annual matchplay contest, a unique event that pits sand browns against grass greens.
The competition, conceived in 2011 by Awali captain Steve Newall and former Royal captain Ed Daly, features pairs matches over 18 holes split between the two courses. Long dominated by The Royal, the rivalry shifted in recent years after Awali claimed victories in 2024 and 2025, making a win or draw sufficient to hold on to the trophy.
This year’s encounter saw 22 players from both clubs in a closely fought battle, with The Royal racing into a 4.5–2.5 lead before Awali mounted a late comeback to level the contest. After The Royal edged a match on the final hole, the outcome hinged on the last pairing, where Newall and Darren Harris secured a decisive victory to seal the draw and ensure Awali’s retention of the cup.
