World number two Jannik Sinner opened his Shanghai Masters title defence with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier on Saturday. The Italian, fresh from winning the China Open, broke early in both sets and saved two break points in the first. He next faces Tallon Griekspoor, with his path eased by Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal.
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev battled past France’s Valentin Royer 6-4, 6-4 despite a foot issue, while world number seven Alex de Minaur beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 6-2. Daniil Medvedev cruised through, but Andrey Rublev was upset by Yoshihito Nishioka. Novak Djokovic plays Sunday
