Champions Collide as New Season Kicks Off
League champions Khalidiya face Cup winners Ahli in Bahrain Super Cup
Al Khalidiya and Al Ahli go head to head tonight in the Bahrain Super Cup final, the traditional curtain-raiser to the new domestic season. The one-off match kicks off at 7pm at Khalifa Sports City Stadium.
Champions and Cup Winners
Al Khalidiya qualified as Nasser bin Hamad Premier League champions after topping the table last term, their second title since being founded in 2020. Ahli booked their place by lifting the King’s Cup, beating Muharraq 4-2 on penalties.
Preparation and Strategy
Al Khalidiya head coach Ali Ashour outlined the team’s preparation: “We underwent intensive training and played strong matches during our external training camp. We improved our team cohesion and fitness levels, in addition to implementing tactical touches to the team. Al Ahli Club is a big club with a large fanbase. It has a capable and respected coach. The humidity is high, so we will manage the match in phases. We have a strong bench with the required experience.”
Key Players in Focus
Both sides enter the final on a high. Khalidiya will turn to top scorer Mahdi Abduljabbar, supported by Brazilian playmaker Gleison Moreira. Al Ahli, who went on to win the King’s Cup final on penalties, will rely on key player Jamal Rashid and Brazilian Wellington Machado, who scored in the final, under the guidance of manager Mohamed Al Nasif.
Khalidiya player Dhiyaa added: “Al Ahli is a great team, but there is no alternative to winning and securing the championship. Al Khalidiya has a highly qualified technical staff, as well as players who possess the necessary experience for matches like these.”
Stakes and Significance
The Super Cup, also known as the King’s Super Cup, carries added prestige and prize money, while offering an early-season psychological edge. Khalidiya are chasing their second win in three years, while Ahli aim for a fourth title.
