A seven-year-old girl died after she was stabbed several times while walking near a group of shops in Chicago’s Chatham neighbourhood, police said.

The attack happened on Saturday morning when a woman approached the girl and stabbed her several times in the back with a sharp object. Police closed off the area around the scene as they investigated.

The girl, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Eddie Marie Hernandez Chacon, was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.

Witnesses told WLS-TV that the girl was walking on the sidewalk holding the hand of an older woman when the attack happened. Police have not said who the woman was or whether she was related to the girl.

People near the scene managed to hold the suspect until police arrived. The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening and was later taken into custody.

Police have not released the suspect’s identity or said whether she knew the girl. The motive for the attack is also unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
