Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that allowing Iran to take control of the Strait of Hormuz would establish a ‘dangerous precedent,’ as tensions over the key route rise.

Rubio said that the United States cannot let Iran selecting which vessels are allowed to sail through the strait, which is one of the world's most critical energy corridors. His comments came amid concerns that tensions might impede shipping through the small route, which transports a large portion of the world's oil supply.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects Iran and Oman, is a major conduit for worldwide energy supplies. Any protracted disruption could have an impact on oil markets, increase shipping prices, and raise concerns about global energy security.

Rubio's warning points out Washington's strong opposition to any Iranian attempt to restrict international navigation across the crucial waterway.
