Nairobi: Kenya observed a day of mourning for the sixteen schoolgirls who died earlier this month in a suspected fire attack that destroyed a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.

Hundreds of mourners attended a memorial service to pay their final respects to the victims, which included grieving families, government officials, and local people. Concerns about boarding school safety have been sparked by the tragedy, that shocked the nation.

Authorities suspect that the fire in the hostel occurred deliberately. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, which injured over 130 children. As part of the ongoing investigation, a number of students have been detained for interrogation.

The incident has sparked public demand for stricter fire safety measures, improved emergency response and greater accountability in schools across Kenya, as officials pledge a thorough investigation into one of the country's deadliest school disasters in recent years.
