Catia La Mar, Venezuela : Rescue teams in Venezuela pulled a 43-year-old man alive from the ruins of a collapsed building eight days after powerful twin earthquakes struck the country, offering a rare moment of hope as the death toll continues to climb and thousands remain missing.

The man, identified as security guard Hernan Gil, was rescued on Thursday from the remains of a seven-story building in Catia La Mar, a coastal area heavily damaged in the June 24 earthquakes. He was brought out on a stretcher after a complex and prolonged rescue operation involving teams from multiple countries.

The rescue sparked emotional scenes at the site, with hundreds of rescuers cheering and embracing after Gil was safely extracted from the debris. His wife described the survival as a “miracle” as teams worked for days to reach him.

Rescue operations involved personnel from Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico. Teams supplied the trapped man with water and oxygen during the operation, while rescuers dug through layers of collapsed concrete to reach him.

Authorities said at least 2,295 people have been confirmed dead, with more than 11,000 injured and nearly 13,000 left homeless after the earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. Tens of thousands more are still unaccounted for.
